The novel approaches and some computational improvements of subband coding of images are described in this paper. Special attention is given to: 2times1-D and nonseparable 2-D wavelet decompositions, computationally improved 2-D ELT and fuzzy postprocessing of subband coded reconstructions. A common characteristic of presented case studies is that the problem of image coding is conceptually treated as a two-dimensional one, although separability is largely exploited for efficiency purposes. Some experimental results of simulations of subband coding of images using different algorithms are also presented.
