At the last session in 1998 of the Presidency of the Yugoslav Society of Mechanics Professor Richard B. Hetnarski, James E. Gleason Professor was elected an honorary member of the Yugoslav Society of Mechanics. 
Richard Bozyslaw Hetnarski was born in Sopnica, Poland, on May 31, 1928. He received an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University in Gdansk in 1952; an M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Warsaw in 1960; a Doctor's degree in Technical Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1964. He served as a Reserch Scientist at the Institute of Aircraft Research in Warsaw from 1955 to 1959, and as Reserch Scientist at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Reserch of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1959 to 1969.
Richard B. Hetnarski immigrated to the U.S.A in 1969, and was naturalized in 1974. He was Visiting Associate Professor at Cornel University from 1969-1970.
Since 1970. he has had positions in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology; Visiting Distinguished Professor (1970-1971), Professor (1971-1992), and James E. Gleason Professor (since 1992). Also, he worked as an Aeronautical Engineer at the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland (1979-80), and was Visiting Professor at the University of Paderborn, Germany (1980).
Richard B. Hetnarski is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the American Academy of Mechanics and the American Society for Engineering Education. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thermal Stresses, Associate editor of Applied Mechanics Reviews, and Editor of series of four books, Thermal Stresses I-IV, published by Elsevier. He is the author of numerous papers in Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, and he translated Mechanics and Mathematics books into Polish from English, Russian, and German, and into English from Russian. Also he served as English edition editor of books translated into English from Polish and Russian.
