PHYTOLINGUISTIC RESEARCH
Contribution to the phytolinguistics III;
The Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, 1998, number of pages: 103
The Second Collection of Papers in Phytolinguistics was edited within the
scope of activities under the Project "Lexicological Research in Southeast
Serbia", carried out by the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš.
The papers published in this edition were reported at the VI Symposium
on the Flora of Southeast Serbia, held in Zaječar, May 1997.
The only exception was the paper of Momčilo Zlatanović that had been
presented at the previous symposium.
1. Vilotije Vukadinović, Herbs in Folk Medicine of the Svrljig Region.
The paper presents a collection of folk terms of medicinal herbs growing
in the region of Svrljig. In the introductory part of the paper, the author
gives a brief history of the herbs and herbalists from the Svrljig region,
as well as of gathering and organized purchasing of medicinal herbs. The
second part of the work contains a glossary of folk terms.
2. Gordana Dragin, The Terms for Weeds in Dialect Dictionaries of the
Serbian Language. Based on the material of 22 Serbian dialect dictionaries
(and several folk collections among them), the folk terms were studied
primarily for the designation of the following plants: Papaver rhoes (field
poppy), Urtica (nettles), Taraxacum officinale (dandelion), Capsella bursa-pastoris
L. (shepherd's purse) and Hordeum murinum L. (farmer's foxtail). Particular
attention is given to the incidence and manner of identification of herbonyms
in the Dictionary of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and in the "Rečnik
bačkih Bunjevaca", the only complete dialect dictionary of a vernacular
from Vojvodina.
3. Nadežda Jović, The Lexicon of Wood Terms in the Dialect of Timok.
The paper offers a survey of the vocabulary related to the trees, forest
species, parts of trees, timbering and products manufactured of wood. The
material was taken from the dictionaries of the dialects of Pirot and Timok
regions. The paper also includes semantic and etymological analyses.
4. Nedeljko Bogdanović, The General and the Particular in Phytonymy.
The author's attention was directed in this work towards the vocabulary
that associates primarily to the facts of flora, and only subsequently
to something else. A survey is given of the lexemes that have one - general
meaning in the standard language, and another - narrower meaning in the
dialect of the southeast Serbia. For example, loza (vine) is the term for
the plant Vitis vinifera, but loza is also a part of certain plants (a
stem).
5. Jordana Marković, Synonymy and Homonymy in the Gardening Vocabulary.
A survey of synonyms and homonyms appearing in the vocabulary of gardening,
as well as the causes and motives for their appearance, are presented in
the sample of the material collected for the compilation of The South-Moravian
Gardening Lexicon.
6. Žarko Bošnjaković, The Structure and Motivation of Agricultural
Phytonyms in Srem. The structure and motivation of certain agricultural
phytonyms appearing in the region of Srem are presented in this paper.
The analysis included the phytonyms of the following families of cultivated
farming sorts: Poaceae, Fabacae, Asteraceae and Chenopodiaceae.
7. Mirjana Sokolović, Syntagmatic Structure of Medicinal Herb Names.
This paper analyzes complex names of medicinal herbs on the basis of the
book "The Treatment with Herbs" by Jovan Tucakov, Ph.D. The paper presents
the models after which the names of medical herbs were created.
8. Mirjana Ilić, Zoomorphic Elements in the Names of Medicinal Herbs.
The paper is based on the material of The Botanical Lexicon by Dragoljub
Simonović and of the book "The Treatment with Herbs" by Jovan Tucakov,
Ph.D. This work presents a survey of the medicinal-herb names that incorporate
animal names in their stems, together with the lexicological, semantic
and word-formation analyses.
9. Borislav Prvulović, Function of Flora in Sorcery (in the Incantations
of South and East Serbia). By means of the descriptive-statistic and analytic-synthetic
approaches, the author gives a survey of phytonyms used in incantations.
The analyzed material originates from the regions of East and South Serbia.
10. Momčilo Zlatanović, The Terms of Phytonymic Origin in the Toponymy
of Poljanica. A relatively large number of the toponyms of phytonymic origin
has been found in the region of Poljanica and presented in this work. A
review of the most common suffixes is given in the final part of the paper.
11. Tanja Trašević, Phytonymic Vocabulary in the Short Stories of Stevan
Sremac. On the basis of the material from the stories of Sremac, the author
gives a survey of phytonyms serving a traditional-ritual function and phytonyms
given in comparisons and sayings.
