The aim of this paper is to analyse how the Serbian present tense is translated into English in narrative texts. Since the tense systems of the two languages differ significantly and the Serbian present tense is used to denote a wide range of situations, theoretically,a great number of English verbal equivalents are possible in translation. However, this impressive divergence is often limited to a fewer number of forms depending on the type of text. The corpus for this analysis was taken from the first four chapters of the original and the translation of the book 'Garden, Ashes', written by the Serbian novelist Danilo Kiš and it contains 605 verbs used in the present tense in the original text. The translation equivalents of these verbs were analysed and the most frequent ones discussed.
Key words: contrastive analysis, present tense, translation equivalents
PREZENT SRPSKOG JEZIKA I NJEGOVI EKVIVALENTI U ENGLESKOM U NARATIVNOM TEKSTU
