ON OCCASION OF THE 60th BIRTHDAY OF PROFESSOR SLAVOLJUB ALEKSIĆ

Slavoljub Aleksić is Full Professor at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Niš. He was born of mother Paraćinka, born Filipović, and father Radomir on January 20, 1951 in Berčinac, Serbia.

He completed elementary school and grammar school of natural science in Donja Trnava and Niš, respectively. In academic year 1969/70 he enrolled at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Niš, where he graduated in May 1975 at the department of Telecommunications defending his B. Sc. work entitled The possibilities of imitation thin beam reflector surfaces, cylindrical, mutually parallel conductors. In 1976, he enrolled in postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Niš, and obtained his M.Sc. degree defending his M.Sc. thesis entitled Moderate aircraft’s broadband antenna with non-directional radiation characteristic. He received the PhD degree on technical science in October 1997 defending the PhD thesis entitled Skin effect in power conductors from the University of Niš.

Since graduation in October 1975, he has been with the Faculty for Electrical Engineering as a teaching assistant at the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering. He received the title of assistant professor in 1980, the title of associate professor in 2003, and the title of full professor in 2008.

Professor S. Aleksić was appointed the head of the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering in 2005.

As a teaching assistant, he performed auditory and laboratory exercises in the course of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, and auditory exercises in the courses of Circuit Theory and Electromagnetics. Since he has received the rank of the assistant professor he has been teaching courses of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, Circuit Theory and Electromagnetics. He is the author of the practicum and collection of solved tasks for the course of Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering. Prof. S. Aleksić is a lecturer at postgraduate and doctoral studies in the field of Electromagnetics, Electromagnetic waves and diffraction, and Atmospheric discharge. Professor S. Aleksić was a member of many boards for evaluation of suitability of thesis themes and boards for promotion of M.Sc. and PhD theses. He supervised four M.Sc. and one PhD theses and is a supervisor of two PhD theses whose development is in progress. The first PhD is related to atmospheric discharge protection, and the second one is related to analysis of wire antenna structures in the presence of the semi-conducting ground.

Prof. S. Aleksić has significant cooperation with foreign scientific institutions: Technische Universitat Ilmenau (Germany), Technical University of Sofia, Technical University of Gabrovo (Bulgaria). On the request of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences he has given opinions on the theme suitability for PhD theses; two times for TU Gabrovo and once for TU Sofia.

He successfully participated in the research of several scientific projects financed by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development of Republic of Serbia. (Field of technological development of Energetic efficiency and renewable sources of energy “Reduction of losses and improvement of energetic cables efficiency modelling cable terminations and joints” and “Development of new software and hardware for purpose applications”), DAAD foundation (Academic Restoration in South East Europe) and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Coupled and inverse problems in electrical machines). In 1992, he has spent three weeks with Professor Veličković at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) with Professor Igor P. Vereschagin (Professor Igor Vereshchagin is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; from 1993 to 2003, he was with Editorial Board of this journal.) in aim to discuss about protection from atmospheric discharge. Also, Professor S. Aleksić spent two months at Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany, provided by DAAD foundation as a part of the Joint project “Academic Restoration in South East Europe”. On the invitation of the Dean of Delaware State University in Dover, Professor Ajan Biswas, he has also spent two weeks in USA in order to participate at Applied Mathematics Summer Workshop.

Most notably, his has successfully participated in organizing three International conferences on Applied Electromagnetics at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš: ΠEC 2005 as a Conference Chairman and ΠEC 2007 and ΠEC 2009 as member of the Scientific Board.

Professor S. Aleksić was the reviewer of Exercises in Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering - alternating currents by Professor D. Mitić, Exercises in Electromagnetics by Professor D. Veličković with collaborators, and Exercises in Electromagnetics by Professor D. Djurdjević. He was also a reviewer of a number of papers submitted for the journal FACTA UNIVERSITATIS, Series: Electronics and Energetics, and International Conferences TELSIKS, ICEST and ΠEC.

The main scientific contributions of Professor S. Aleksić are in Applied electromagnetics, Systems for protection from atmospheric discharge, and High voltage systems and cable accessories. As a co-author, he has published chapters in three books. In the first book DISCRETE AND COMPUTATIONAL MATHEMATICS, chapter Magnetic Field Determination of Different Shaped Permanent Magnets (published by NOVA SCIENCE PUBLISHERS); in the second book INTELLIGENT COMPUTER TECHNIQUES IN APPLIED ELECTROMAGNETICS, chapter Fictitious Magnetic Contours as Eddy Currents Exciter (published by Springer Verlag), and in the third book COMPUTER FIELD MODELS OF ELECTROMAGNETICS DEVICES, chapter One Method for Magnetic Multilayer Systems Determination (published by IOS PRESS). He is a co-author of the monograph Dielectric and semiconducting bodies in electromagnetic field (in Serbian) published by University of Niš, Faculty of Electronic Engineering.

During his academic career Professor S. Aleksić developed research activities in many areas. In the area of Power Engineering he proposed technical solution for Cable terminations with a new deflector solution. He has published 152 scientific papers, among them 11 in the renowned international journals: Electromgnetics, International Journal of Electronics and Communications, Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements, Journal of Electrostatics, Electric Power Systems Research, and FACTA UNIVERSTATIS, Series: Electronics and Energetics. Other papers have been published in domestic journals (16), in the proceedings of national conferences (52), and in the proceedings of international conferences (75).

Aware of the fact that such a short review cannot exibit all of Professor Slavoljub Alekcićs activities in the field of electromagnetics and in other fields of his lengthy and prolific work, we have presented only a part of the results from his research and pedagogical work. Therefore, on the occasion of Professor Slavoljub Aleksićs 60th birthday, in FACTA UNIVERSITATIS, Series: Electronics and Energetics we express our deep gratitude and respect, with best wishes for his good health and personal happiness. We hope that he will continue his productive and creative work with the same energy, perseverance, zeal, and success as always.
