GUEST EDITOR'S OVERVIEW

Selected papers from the IEEE Conference on Telecommunications in Modern Satellite, Cable and Broadcasting Services - TELSIKS'97, Nis, Yugoslavia, October 8-10, 1997

This Issue of the international journal FACTA UNIVERSITATES, series: Electronics and Energetics contains selected papers that were presented at the 3rd Conference on Telecommunications in Modern Satellite, Cable and Broadcasting Services - TELSIKS'97, held in Nis, Yugoslavia, October 8-10, 1997.

TELSIKS'97 was organized by the Faculty of Electronic Engineering - Nis, Ei HOLDING Co. - Nis and Radio-Television of Serbia - Belgrade. It is very significant for organizers that, this year, a technical sponsorship is obtained from IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. Also, IEEE Yugoslavia Section, Yugoslav Society for Microwave Techniques and Technology, Yugoslav Society for Telecommunications and others helped very much the organization of the Conference. The conference TELSIKS'97 was a highly competent scientific and professional meeting enabling an opportunity for researchers, scientists and engineers to present their recent achievements in the area of modern telecommunication services. The Conference topics were: Satellite communications, Cable communication systems, Radio communications, Satellite and terrestrial broadcast systems, Television technique, Applied electromagnetics, Antennas and propagation, RF and microwave technique, Optical communication systems, Telecommunication and DSP integrated circuits, Modulations and Coding, Signal processing, Multimedia, Telecommunication networks, etc. The Conference focused on modern broadcasting technologies as MMDS.

All submitted scientific and application oriented contributed papers have been reviewed by an International Review Board. On the basis of that, 175 papers (which authors are from 21 countries) have been accepted for oral or poster presentation. In addition, a number of invited speakers provided the first hand information on the state in focused fields. All papers were presented in English and published in the Conference Proceedings. The technical program also included two workshops (Cable Television and MMDS) and two round tables. The Conference was accompanied by an exhibition of research results and industrial products related to the Conference topics.

The selection of the papers presented in this issue was made according several reviewing steps. During the reviewing process before the conference each reviewer from the International Review Board had the possibility to propose one or more papers for publishing in the Facta Universitatis. Further, all chairmen of oral and poster sessions evaluated the presented papers and gave suggestions for publishing in special issue. Final decision about paper selection was made by Facta Universitatis Editorial Board. We tried that our choice illustrates the wide range of subject coverage at the conference. The selected papers are extended and adjusted to the journal form.

I want to thank all the people who participated in reviewing and editing this special issue. I truly hope that this issue will be of the interest to many people who work in the field of communications. Also, I would like to thank and congratulate all the authors who contributed to making the conference and this issue a success.

At the end, I use the opportunity to invite the authors to take part in the TELSIKS'99 conference.
